Why Oversized Baby Clothes Just Make Sense

Babies grow quickly.

Toddlers somehow grow even quicker, usually approximately three days after you've finally bought them a complete wardrobe in their current size.

Which is one of the reasons we're such big fans of oversized baby clothes.

Yes, we love the relaxed Aussie-inspired look. But oversized clothing isn't just an aesthetic choice. Done properly, it gives little ones more room to move, more room to grow and potentially gives parents a little more wear before it's time to size up. Again.

And when you're already buying new shoes every five minutes, we'll take the win.

What are oversized baby clothes?

Oversized baby and toddler clothes are intentionally designed with a more relaxed fit than traditional childrenswear.

That doesn't mean buying something three sizes too big and hoping for the best.

A properly designed oversized fit takes the whole shape of the garment into account. Think dropped shoulders, wider bodies, relaxed legs and slightly longer proportions that still look intentional when worn at the child's actual size.

It's one of the ideas ROOBiE was built around.

After having Reu, I became slightly obsessed with the relaxed children's clothing I kept seeing from Australian brands. The silhouettes felt completely different to a lot of the baby clothes I could find here in the UK.

Roomy. Laid-back. Actually designed to be played in.

So when I started ROOBiE, oversized fits became part of the plan from day one.

The obvious benefit: they can last longer

We all know the feeling.

You buy something in their current size. It fits perfectly.

Then you wash it twice, blink, and suddenly their wrists are hanging out of it.

An oversized fit gives you a little more breathing room.

A jumper that's intentionally relaxed can start slightly roomy, become the perfect oversized fit and eventually be worn a little more fitted before it's finally outgrown.

The same principle works with bottoms. A little extra length can be rolled initially and worn down as they grow.

It won't stop your child growing at an alarming rate, unfortunately.

But it can mean you're not immediately replacing perfectly good clothes just because they've gained another centimetre.

Our Oversized T-Shirt is a good example. It's deliberately designed with a relaxed, boxy silhouette rather than simply being a standard T-shirt made bigger.

More room for actual toddler life

Toddler clothing has quite a demanding job description.

Climbing.

Running.

Crawling under tables for absolutely no reason.

Sitting in positions that would require an adult to book an emergency physio appointment.

Their clothes need to move with them.

A relaxed oversized shape gives little bodies plenty of room for all of it without relying on restrictive cuts.

It's why we design our pieces for everyday wear rather than "save it for best" wear.

They're supposed to go to nursery. They're supposed to go to the park. They're supposed to get covered in lunch.

That's childhood.

Oversized doesn't mean drowning in clothes

This is probably the biggest misconception around oversized toddler clothes.

Oversized should still fit.

The shoulder, body, sleeves and length all need to work together so the finished piece looks intentionally relaxed rather than simply too big.

That's also why we'd usually recommend choosing your child's normal ROOBiE size if you want the intended oversized look.

If you prefer a more traditional fit, sizing down can sometimes work depending on the piece and your child's measurements.

Buying several sizes bigger isn't necessary.

They make layering much easier

British weather likes to keep us humble.

Cold in the morning. Weirdly warm by lunchtime. Raining at nursery pick-up.

An oversized wardrobe makes layering much easier because there's naturally a little extra room underneath.

A long sleeve tee can sit under a jumper without everything becoming tight. A hoodie can go underneath a coat. A tee can be layered over a thinner base when the weather can't decide what season it is.

And if you're trying to build a wardrobe where pieces work across more than one season, layering matters.

It's also where a baby and toddler capsule wardrobe really earns its keep.

Instead of having completely separate wardrobes for every tiny shift in temperature, the same core pieces can be layered differently throughout the year.

The bit where oversized meets capsule dressing

Making clothes last longer is useful.

Making them all work together is even better.

And then there's the washing

Getting longer wear from children's clothes only really works if they can survive being worn repeatedly.

There's not much point designing something with growing room if the fabric gives up before your toddler does.

That's why fit and quality have to work together.

We want ROOBiE pieces to be the ones you reach for again and again. The ones that get worn, washed, put back in the drawer and somehow selected again two days later.

And when they're eventually outgrown, we want them in good enough condition to be passed down.

It's about how many times it can realistically be worn.

How to build an oversized baby or toddler wardrobe

You don't need to replace everything your child owns with oversized clothing overnight.

Start with the pieces that get the most wear.

A relaxed jumper or hoodie.

A couple of easy bottoms.

An oversized tee.

A one-piece.

A coat with enough room for layers underneath.

Then choose colours that work together so those five pieces don't create five outfits. They create loads of them.

Are oversized baby clothes worth it?

We obviously have a slight bias here.

But for us, oversized baby and toddler clothes solve more than one problem.

They give little ones room to move, make layering easier and create that relaxed Aussie-inspired look we love.

More importantly, that extra growing room can help clothes stay in their wardrobe for longer.

Because we'd rather make something your child wears again and again than something they wear three times before you realise the sleeves are already too short.

And when they finally do outgrow it?

Hopefully it's still looking good enough to head straight into another little person's wardrobe.
