The Toddler Packing List: What You Actually Need for a Weekend Away

Going away for two nights with a toddler?

Lovely.

Until you realise your tiny travelling companion apparently requires more luggage than two fully grown adults.

Between the spare clothes, nappies, snacks, favourite toys and approximately 47 things you might need just in case, packing for a weekend away with a toddler can feel like preparing for a three-week expedition.

But here's the thing. You probably don't need nearly as much as you think.

A little planning, a few practical toddler travel essentials and some clever mix-and-match outfits can make packing considerably easier.

Whether you're heading off for a family weekend, visiting grandparents or squeezing in a little UK staycation, here's a realistic toddler packing list that covers what you'll actually use.

How many outfits should you pack for a toddler?

The answer depends on your toddler's age, where you're going and their ability to cover themselves in an entire yoghurt within 30 seconds.

But for a typical two-night weekend away, we'd suggest starting with:

  • 3 everyday outfits
  • 2 spare outfits
  • 2 sets of pyjamas
  • 1 warm jumper or hoodie
  • 1 suitable coat or jacket
  • 3 to 4 pairs of socks
  • Enough underwear or nappies for the trip, plus extras
  • 1 pair of everyday shoes
  • Wellies or another suitable pair if needed

That's usually plenty for a weekend, assuming you're not planning any particularly adventurous activities.

The trick is making sure your clothes work together, rather than packing five completely separate outfits.

Build a mini toddler capsule wardrobe for your trip

If you've ever packed a suitcase full of toddler clothes only to realise none of the tops go with the spare trousers, you'll understand why we love a capsule wardrobe.

Instead of planning individual outfits, choose a handful of pieces that can be mixed and matched.

For example, three tops and three pairs of bottoms could give you nine different combinations.

Obviously, your toddler isn't going to need nine outfits for a weekend away.

But having options means that when someone spills their breakfast down their jumper, you can grab another top without needing to change everything.

Choose colours that work together

Keeping your toddler's travel wardrobe within a small colour palette makes everything easier.

At ROOBiE, our four signature colours are Macadamia Milk, Choccy Biccy, Bondi Breeze and Raspberry Whip.

They're designed to work together, meaning you can swap tops, trousers and layers around without worrying about whether anything matches.

Our mix-and-match toddler outfit ideas explore how to get more combinations from fewer pieces.

And yes, this also means you can let your toddler choose their own outfit occasionally.

Within reason.

What toddler clothes should you pack for a weekend away?

1. Comfortable everyday tops

Start with a few easy tops that work with all your bottoms.

Long-sleeved tees are particularly useful for autumn and winter trips, while boxy tees are great for warmer weather or layering.

Look for soft, breathable fabrics and relaxed fits that allow plenty of movement.

Because whether you're exploring somewhere new or spending the afternoon in a café, your toddler will almost certainly find something to climb.

Our baby and toddler tops are designed to coordinate across the ROOBiE capsule, making them handy for travelling light.

2. Practical trousers and leggings

For a weekend away, we'd recommend packing a mixture of relaxed trousers and leggings.

Something easy for travelling, something suitable for outdoor adventures and a spare pair for inevitable accidents.

Elasticated waistbands are particularly helpful for toddlers who are toilet training or learning to dress themselves.

And we'd avoid anything too restrictive.

Sitting in a car seat for two hours is uncomfortable enough without adding stiff trousers into the equation.

ROOBiE's toddler trousers and leggings include relaxed styles designed for everyday movement and mixing with different tops.

3. A warm layer for unpredictable weather

If you're travelling anywhere in the UK, it's worth packing an extra layer.

Even in summer.

Because British weather has a remarkable ability to change its mind.

A jumper, fleece or quarter zip is useful for cooler mornings, outdoor activities and evenings when the temperature drops.

Choose something that layers easily over a T-shirt without feeling bulky.

A quarter zip can be especially handy because you can adjust the neckline when your toddler gets warmer, rather than immediately removing the whole thing.

4. Outerwear that works for different activities

For autumn and winter weekends, a practical coat is essential.

But that doesn't necessarily mean packing multiple jackets.

Versatile outerwear can make a big difference when you're trying to save suitcase space.

Our 4-in-1 reversible teddy coats are designed with detachable sleeves and reversible styling, giving little ones four different ways to wear one coat.

A jacket, a gilet and two different colour options, without needing to pack four separate pieces.

Just remember that teddy coats aren't a substitute for waterproof outerwear in heavy rain. If the forecast looks particularly soggy, pack a suitable waterproof layer too.

Don't forget the non-clothing toddler travel essentials

Clothes are only half the packing battle.

Depending on your toddler's age and where you're staying, you'll also want to think about the everyday things that make life easier.

Changing and bedtime essentials

Pack enough nappies, wipes and changing supplies for the journey and your stay, with a few extras for delays.

If your toddler is toilet training, spare underwear and easy-to-remove trousers are worth their weight in gold.

For bedtime, familiar pyjamas, a favourite comforter and anything that's part of their usual routine can help make sleeping somewhere new feel a little less strange.

You don't need to recreate their entire bedroom.

Although your toddler may strongly disagree.

Snacks, entertainment and practical extras

A few things worth remembering:

  • Refillable water bottle
  • Favourite snacks
  • Bibs or wipes for mealtimes
  • Small books or toys
  • Travel-friendly activities
  • Any medication or essential toiletries
  • Sun protection or rainwear, depending on the forecast

If you're travelling by car, keep a spare outfit, wipes and snacks somewhere accessible.

Preferably not buried underneath three suitcases in the boot.

How to pack toddler clothes without overpacking

Plan outfits before they go in the bag

Lay everything out and check that each top works with at least two bottoms.

If something only goes with one specific outfit, consider whether you really need it.

This is where having a small collection of coordinated clothing makes a difference.

Pack outfits in separate bags

Packing cubes or small fabric bags can be brilliant for organising toddler clothes.

You could separate everyday outfits, pyjamas and spare clothes so you're not emptying the entire suitcase every time you need a clean pair of leggings.

Keep one complete spare outfit in your day bag too.

Don't automatically size up

It can be tempting to pack larger clothes for extra room, particularly if your toddler is between sizes.

But oversized clothing should still fit properly.

Long trousers that drag under shoes or sleeves that constantly cover little hands aren't particularly practical for exploring.

ROOBiE pieces are already intentionally oversized, so there's usually no need to buy several sizes bigger.

We've explained the thinking behind this in our guide to oversized baby clothes and why bigger fits can last longer.

A simple toddler weekend outfit plan

Still not sure what to pack?

Here's how we'd plan clothing for a typical two-night autumn weekend away.

Friday: Travel day

Relaxed joggers, a long-sleeved tee and a quarter zip.

Easy to sit in, easy to layer and practical for a quick stop along the way.

Saturday: Exploring

Comfortable trousers, a fresh top, a warm layer and suitable outerwear.

Add wellies and waterproofs if you're planning outdoor activities.

Sunday: Heading home

Leggings or joggers with another coordinating top.

Keep a spare outfit accessible for any last-minute disasters.

Pack two additional changes for the weekend, and you've got plenty of flexibility without taking half the wardrobe.

Travelling with toddlers doesn't need to mean packing everything

Realistically, you'll probably still pack something you don't use.

And there's a good chance you'll forget something incredibly obvious.

That's parenting.

But having a smaller, coordinated toddler wardrobe makes travelling easier because you're not relying on individual outfits staying clean.

You can swap pieces around, layer according to the weather and get more use from the clothes you've brought.

It's the same thinking behind ROOBiE.

Fewer pieces that work harder, rather than drawers full of clothes that only go with one thing.

So whether you're planning a weekend away, your next family holiday or simply trying to make everyday dressing a little less chaotic, explore the ROOBiE ESSENTiALS collection for easy-to-style pieces designed to mix, match and be worn on repeat.

Because the less time you spend packing, the more time you have for the important stuff.

Like negotiating which completely unnecessary toy absolutely must come on holiday.
